PLENARY SESSION

After a year of pandemic and transition, the Space Science Week 2021 Plenary Session will celebrate the past year’s accomplishments and look to the future as we begin the Biden years of space policy. We invite you to join us for the webcast on Tuesday, March 23, from 11am-5pm ET.

During the plenary, we will hear about the state of NASA’s Science Mission Directorate (SMD) and upcoming science missions from Associate Administrator Thomas Zurbuchen and NASA SMD science Division Directors. We will then hear from Acting Administrator Steve Jurczyk, addressing NASA’s priorities and future. In the afternoon, we will hear from leaders of space agencies from across the world as they reflect on their most impactful science accomplishments during the year of pandemic.

PUBLIC LECTURE: CLIMATE AS SEEN FROM SPACE

Is it possible to connect the frequency and intensity of extreme weather events with climate change? How do space-based observations of Earth support the latest in climate science?

Join us for a public lecture on Tuesday, March 23, 2021 at 5:30pm ET to hear from NASA Senior Climate Advisor Gavin Schmidt about Earth observations from space and their unique perspective on climate. During the lecture, he’ll explore the emerging science of extreme event attribution and what the next decade might hold.

If you are only interested in attending the public lecture, you can register just for that event at http://climatefromspace.eventbrite.com.

This event is organized by the National Academies’ Space Studies Board.

WORKSHOP: UTILIZING COMMERCIAL PAYLOAD SERVICES FOR BIOLOGICAL AND PHYSICAL SCIENCES RESEARCH

As NASA returns to explore the moon, the agency has made it clear that Commercial Lunar Payloads Services (CLPS) landers will be important platforms for delivering experiments to the moon and conducting scientific research and technology demonstrations. Join the National Academies and experts from NASA, CLPS provider Masten Space Systems, and U.S. and international science investigator institutes for a virtual workshop on CLPS landers on March 24 from 11am-6pm ET and March 25 from 11-11:45am ET. During the workshop, experts will discuss plans for biological and physical sciences on the moon as well as CLPS plans and future opportunities.
